"To science, pilot of industry, conqueror of disease, multiplier of the harvest, explorer of the universe, revealer of nature's laws, eternal guide to truth." This bold quote takes on even greater meaning when one learns how it was revised from a preliminary version. Originally it described science as a "promoter" of industry, instead of "pilot". This quote was also modified by putting "conqueror of disease" in place of "healer of the sick." NAS member George Hale suggested this change because it emphasized eliminating disease (preventative medicine) rather than treatment of those who were already infected.
